There are over 500 registered horn players at this year's IHS conference! This presents a challenge because the hall where most of the playing is held holds only 460 people. Already in less than two days we have been treated to many wonderful concerts, not only by horn players, but chamber groups of various types. It's quite amazing to immerse yourself in, especially if you are a hack like me.
Today's luncheon went off well. There were 20 +/- list members there. If I could remember everyone's name, I'd tell you who all was there. A number of list posters and lurkers are here. It is great to finally meet so many people who I've only passed electrons with (hmm, does that sound right?). It's also wonderful to hear so many hornists. A gratifying number of those featured in recitals so far are women, a trend I hope will continue.
My little presentation occurs tomorrow at 1:30. I'm up against a couple of fairly scholarly topics so the crowd could be 10 or it could be 100. It will be interesting to see what happens. As far as I can tell, I am the only 'artist' listed in the program who is not a pro, student, or teacher of the instrument.
Dorms are interesting. The rooms have no AC and it is about 10 degrees warmer tonight than last night. Combine that with the fact that there is no circulation with the door closed, not to mention that the cots are (a) elevated 3-5 feet off the floor and (b) about as long and wide as I am, and you can probably figure out how much I slept last night. Still, you cannot beat the price, and the meals are really quite good. These Eastman kids seem to eat pretty well.
I have written down a lot of stuff from yesterday and will try to get it entered tomorrow .. AFTER the presentation. Until then, this is your Roving Reporter Ron from Rochester. ;-)
